“Our mentality has to step up”
COACH’S CORNER: 5 MINUTES WITH JIMMY COLLINS (as published in Whoosh! magazine Jan. 16, 2006)
Collins: “Right now, we’re probably at a C-minus. We should be a lot higher. I still really believe in these guys. The problem right now is that I don’t think they believe in themselves.”
Whoosh!: What do think of the team’s 8-7 record at this time (before UWGB game)?
Collins: “I really think we should be better than that. Our record should something like 11-4. Anytime you can beat Georgia Tech at Georgia Tech and beat Montana State and San Diego State at the Top of the World tournament, you’re a pretty good team. We’re much than we showed at Butler and against Milwaukee.”
Whoosh!: Is there a particular player that has surprised you with his play this season?
Collins: “I think Othyus [Jeffers], because we’ve never seen him play at this level. Justin [Bowen], obviously is playing better than he did, accepting more responsibility. Jovan [Stefanov] is playing pretty good.”
Whoosh!: With Youngstown State winning twice early in the conference schedule, do you feel that the conference is up for grabs?
Collins: “I felt that all the way, but I think Milwaukee is the cream of the crop. Youngstown is playing with one heart and they’ll be tough to beat, especially in Youngstown.”
Whoosh!: What needs to happen for the team to step up in the second half?
Collins: “Our mentality as a whole has to step up. I think Justin and Othyus are playing at level high enough for us to win. Their roles are to lead this team in a positive manner.”
Whoosh!: What can the Flames do the rest of the season to remain a contender?
Collins: “Play harder together. Accept their opportunities more. Each individual has to understand that each play is run for them and that’s what makes a good team. Not just watch the other guys play.”
