UIC, Xavier could be on collision course

The Flames, coming off a 21-9 season and an NIT appearance, have arguably the best team in school history, and could find out quickly how good they are as a possible match-up with NCAA participant and West Coast Conference tournament champion San Diego awaits in the semifinals.
Xavier (26-6 last year), the host school of the tournament, sits on the other side of the bracket and opens with Coppin State of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
UC-Irvine was 20-9 last season, but missed the NIT after losing in the Big West tournament semifinals to Utah State. The Anteaters return three starters in a quest for their third consecutive winning season.
The winner of the Flames-Anteaters game will play the winner of the San Diego-Oakland (Mich.) contest in the semis. Mercer and Ohio will play in the other quarterfinal on the Xavier side of the bracket.

Whoosh! has learned that the UIC Flames will open their 2003-04 regular season against UC-Irvine in the first round of the Black Coaches Association Classic at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati Nov. 15.
