Final schedule could have Demonic twist
LOCAL BATTLE ON THE HORIZON
(8/19/04)
According to a source in the UIC athletic department, the DePaul Blue Demons will play host to the Flames at the Allstate Arena during the non-conference portion of the schedule.
It will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 1980-81 season – UIC’s first season as a Dvision I program. De Paul defeated the Flames 78-53 in the second game of the season under coach Tom Meyer, son of legendary DePaul coach Ray Meyer.
The teams also met twice in 1946-47 – the school’s first season of intercollegiate basketball – with DePaul won both of those matchups easily.
For many years, Flames supporters and athletic officials hoped for a game with the Blue Demons. Athletic director Jim Schmidt once said that “[UIC] would play them at 3 in the morning on the L tracks.”
On numerous occasions, UIC coach Jimmy Collins commented about a potential game between the schools.
“It would be a great game for the fans of this city,” he said.
Now, apparently it will be a reality.
GEORGIA TECH, DUKE GAMES SET IN STONE: The Atlantic Coast Conference released their men’s basketball schedule Wednesday, and both the Georgia Tech and Duke games are official.
The Flames will host Georgia Tech, who was the national runner-up last season, at the UIC Pavilion Monday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
The UIC-Duke game will be Tuesday, Dec. 14 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. The game tips at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
