The big three earn more hardware

BANKS, BAILEY AND WILLIAMS HONORED BY HORIZON

Three Flames earned recognition from the Horizon League Sunday for their stellar seasons.

Senior guard Cedrick Banks was named First-Team All-League after averaging 18.6 points over 29 games, starting in 27. He also averages 3.3 rebounds per game and has handed out 60 assists. In addition, Banks, shot 45 percent from the field, 44 percent from three-point range, and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Senior point guard Martell Bailey was named Second-Team All-League and to the All-Defensive Team. Bailey ranks second nationally with 8.1 assists per game. He also averaged 8.2 points over 29 contests and his assists-to-turnover ratio is around 2.5-1. He also has 51 steals, which ranks among the league leaders.

Senior forward Armond Williams was also named to the All-Defensive Team. The rugged and physical had 56 steals and 17 blocked shots during the regular season and helped to contain star players such as Wright State forward Seth Doliboa. He also averages 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest, while playing in all 29 games.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee forward Dylan Page was the Horizon League Player of the Year, averaging 20.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Joining Banks and Page on the league’s First Team was Doliboa, Loyola forward Paul McMillan, and Milwaukee guard Ed McCants.

Bailey’s fellow Second-Teamers were Wright State guard Vernard Hollins, Butler forward Mike Monserez, Wisconsin-Green Bay guard Brandon Morris, and Detroit forward Elijah Warren.

McCants was the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year after averaging 16.9 points per game for the regular-season champion Panthers. Joining him were Morris, Milwaukee forward Joah Tucker, Cleveland State forward Omari Westley, and Wright State guard DaShaun Wood.

Wright State first-year head coach Paul Biancardi was the Horizon League Coach of the Year after leading the Raiders to an outstanding turnaround. WSU was 14-13 overall and 10-6 in the league after marks of 10-18, 4-12 last year. The Raiders finished tied for fourth with Detroit after contending for the regular season title until mid-season.

The Horizon League tournament begins Tuesday at campus sites. The pairings are as follows:

#7 Youngstown State at #6 Butler, 6 p.m.

FRIDAY, MARCH 5 2ND ROUND (at Butler or UIC)

CSU-Detroit winner vs. Loyola-WSU winner, 4:30 p.m.

YSU-Butler winner vs. #3 Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7 p.m.

SATURDAY, MARCH 6 SEMIFINALS (at Butler or UIC)

CSU-Detroit-Loyola-WSU winner vs. #1 Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 4:30 p.m.

YSU-Butler-UWGB vs. #2 UIC, 7 p.m.

TUESDAY, MARCH 9 CHAMPIONSHIP (at Butler or highest seed)

Semifinal winners, 8 p.m.
