UICís Dominique Matthews, who averaged 20.0 points last week, was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week.

Redshirt freshman guard Dominique Matthews has started hitting his stride after missing most of last season with a broken thumb.

The St. Rita product earned his first honor from the Horizon League as he was named the conferenceís Freshman of the Week following another strong week. Matthews averaged 20.0 points as the Flames split a homestand with Youngstown State and Cleveland State. He has now scored in double figures in nine of his last 10 contests.

He scored a career-high 28 points in an 84-81 win over Youngstown State on Thursday night. He was 11-for-17 from the field and buried a career-high five 3-pointers to go with seven rebounds and three assists.

In Sundayís 66-63 loss to Cleveland State, Matthews played a season-high 38 minutes while starting his third game of the season. He had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists against the Vikings.

After scoring in double figures in just four of his first 12 games, Matthews picked things up in Horizon League play. He leads the Flames with 13.2 points per game in conference games, showing the ability he flashed briefly last season before his injury. Matthews is averaging 9.9 points overall this season.

Matthews became the third UIC player to win Freshman of the Week honors this season following Marcus Ottey (Nov. 21) and Godwin Boahen (Dec. 26). Tarkus Ferguson, who arguably has had the best season of the Flames freshmen, hasnít yet won the weekly honor. The Flames took home the honor nine times last season, including eight by Dikembe Dixson and once by Michael Kolawole.
