Farragut grad McGee set to be a Flame next season
(1/12/03)
Whoosh! has learned that former Farragut star Marcetteaus McGee recently enrolled at UIC and would be eligible to play next season with the Flames, provided he can overcome some legal obstacles.
McGee, who originally signed with the University of Wisconsin last Spring, was released from scholarship upon his request after being charged with second-degree sexual assault and intimidation of a victim on July 25, 2002 in Madison, Wis.
A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf at a hearing last September and the case is still pending. McGee never enrolled for classes at Wisconsin and moved back to Chicago in August.
McGee told Farragut coach William Nelson that he enrolled for the Spring semester, was offered a scholarship and will likely accept the offer. A check of the University web site confirms his status as a current student.
The 6-foot 1-inch point guard was a Chicago Tribune special mention All-State after averaging 16 points and six assists per game for a 22-10 Farragut team, which lost to eventual Class AA state champion Westinghouse in the Public League title game.
McGee can score off penetration and was known as a solid three-point shooter in high school. This could be a major coup for the Flames, who missed out on Thornwood point guard Eric Gray, who committed to Indiana State.
He played alongside Tribune first-team All-State pick Elliott Poole, who signed with UIC during the Spring. Poole, a 6-foot-7 forward, is sitting out this season after failing to meet NCAA Initial Eligibility Standards.
